What It Is: A chakra reading with Soul Train Awards host Erykah Badu
Who Tried It: Hannah Kavy, Social Media Editor
Level of Difficulty: Not difficult at all! Maybe 3/10
Fans refer to her as the queen of soul, a style icon and a Grammy-winning artist, but Erykah Badu is also much more than that.
The musician, 46, also happens to be in touch with her spiritual side. After my experience with her, I’d even go as far as calling her my spiritual guru. From appearing in the documentary Holistic Wellness for the Hip Hop Generation to sharing her daily routine in interviews and on her social media, Badu has offered an abundance of advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle and be in touch with one’s inner self.
Besides her daily wheatgrass shot, green juice and salt bath, the soul queen keeps herself healthy by practicing walking meditation and making sure her chakras are aligned and balanced. Not only am I a huge Badu fan, but I’ve always prided myself on leading a healthy lifestyle, being a clean eater and occasionally practicing yoga, so participating in a chakra reading with Badu was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
When I entered the room, I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect. But let me just say, it was a magical experience. When Badu entered, the whole room went silent. I sat there, green juice in hand, starstruck by the musician. As she walked around the room, the bells around her ankles tinkled as the sandalwood and sage incense she was burning filled the room.
She stood in front of the room and told us she was going to teach us about a passion of hers: chakras. Badu, fittingly wearing a “peace” sweatshirt, filled up a pillowcase with different colored crayons and had everyone pick one. After a few jokes and some chatter, our spiritual guide for the evening began our lesson in chakras.
Badu explained the seven main chakras (a.k.a. energy centers in the body): Root, Sacral, Solar, Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown. Each chakra has a specific color and corresponding inner organs. The Baduizm artist explained that certain physical dysfunctions, like digestive problems and reproductive issues, relate to your energy or chakra in that specific region of your body. Having asthma or shoulder problems? Your heart chakra may need to be realigned.

You may already know that each chakra has a corresponding color, but did you know that each also has a corresponding music note? Here’s where it got really interesting. Badu pulled out her tuning forks and revealed something to us that she claims she never used to tell people. In albums like Baduizm, New Amerykah Part One & New Amerykah Part Two, Badu used chakra notes in the background of her songs. Although none of her songs sound the same, they all have one thing in common: They make people feel a certain way—and that’s partially due to the chakra notes.
After the full and detailed explainer on chakras, Badu asked us questions, answered questions and shared some incredible stories of her friendship with Prince, her experience being a birth and death doula and more. Oh, and one song she wished she had written? “Blue” by Joni Mitchell, whom she said is one of her personal heroes.
Verdict: This was an incredible experience. I had no knowledge about chakras before this, and now I plan to teach everyone in my life about them. The reading itself was not difficult at all. The only reason I’m giving it a level three difficulty is because it was slightly difficult to remain calm and keep my cool while standing in a room with Ms. Badu.
To see more of Badu, tune in to the Soul Train Awards on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on BET and BET HER.
